An Iranian blogger friend sent me an email, asking if I knew that Hasan Bulkhari, a senior cultural adviser to Iran’s Education Ministry, recently stated that the animated series ‘Tom and Jerry’ was created as part of a Jewish conspiracy.
Yes, I wrote back. I read an article about that story. Sounds ludicrous to me. What do you think? Surely nobody in Iran takes this kind of nonsense seriously!
In response, my friend sent me this Memri video of Bulkhari explaining his theory in front of a rapt group of students in a university lecture hall.
I watched those students sitting there, listening and taking notes, and I wondered what to think. I asked my Iranian blogger friend if he thought the students took the lecture seriously.
“Ha!” he answered. “They are taking notes because they know they have to answer exam questions. But what really makes me upset is the degree of stupidity. I mean, if you’re going to be an anti-Semite at least do your research! Disney never made Tom and Jerry – it was a Warner Bros. production. Second, it was made in the early 1940s!”
