In the past year, 138 members of the security forces have been killed in the line of duty, bringing the total of men and women killed defending the state since 1860 to 22,123. Today Israel remembers it’s fallen sons and daughters. At 8PM tonight the siren sounded announcing the beginning of this day of remembrance. Television for the next 24 hours will show the personal stories of these people and the devastation their loss left behind. Stories of the fallen from the Six Day War to a soldier killed while on patrol in the West Bank. We walk around and hurry along our busy day and once in a while hear on the news about an attack where a soldier was killed or some other loss of life, we slow down briefly pause and think about the family and friends left behind, but for the most part go on. Today is the day we dedicate to the fallen, we stop and listen. We listen to the mother who visits her son’s grave every day for 2 years. We listen to the father who is afraid to go into his son’s room. We listen to the Russian immigrant mother who still waits for her son to come home and misses him every waking moment. We listen to the mother who blames herself for not dropping off her daughter at her army base one fateful day, after her daughter was killed waiting for the bus. We listen to them all and share their pain.
We remember them all.
Peace.
