Halahaka remake and the rising blond factor

Halahaka Original Cover

If you wish to witness the massive change that has occurred in Israel, and especially when it comes to Israeli culture, all you have to do is look at the publicity picture of the new Habima musical “Halahaka“. This new (and not so original) play is based on the hugely popular film from 1976 by the same title, which was directed by one of Israel’s most successful directors Avi Nesher. The film, as well as the play, tells the story of a group of military singers and musicians who are put together by the army to form a highly popular verity show. The story begins when three new soldiers enter the group and are received in a not-so-nice manner, until that is, they prove their worth and form romantic relationships with each other.

As you can well imagine, do to the fact that the plot deals with very young people (18-20 years old), the film is full of energy and life, and represents to a lot of young Israelis-good old Israel, with its signature humor and manners. The thing is, looking at the publicity shot mentioned before, it is easily noticed that things have changed over the past 30 years. The musical contains 6 main female characters, 5 of them unmistakably blond (whether natural or bleached is anybody’s guess), where as the photograph taken from the original film, clearly shows that out of the 7 troup members, only 2 of them are actual natural blonds.

While it might be said that this a slightly superficial way of judging the entire scale of changes in the Israeli culture, it is safe to say that even in Israeli modern theatre and certainly in local television and films, blonds today do have more fun, or at least have a better chance of getting picked for major roles.

Well, there has to be some kind of an up-side after enduring all those corny “dumb blonde” jokes :)

Okay, so it is blond. Now I’m embarrassed.

  3. Perhaps, but if you look around any Israeli street these days, you’re going to see tons of fake blondes, so maybe it’s just a reflection of what’s happening in real life.

In any event, this is one of my absolute favorite Israeli films, and I can’t wait for the musical to hit the stage!

What I noticed in Israel last time I was there was the proliferation of the Aryan look on Israeli television. All those blondes with blue eyes. Sad and pathetic beyond words that we have bought the Nazis’ message. Because this is what we’re broadcasting: that the Nazi ideal is our ideal too. And in a country which is at least half Mizrachi.

Hush, miki, don’t give away the Elders of Zion’s secret plan to rule the world through fake Aryan looking Jewish Woman seducers!

PS: Getting impatient waiting for the next installment of Jill’s Adventures in Israel!
