Have you noticed how many new Israeli bands have popped up in the last five years or so? I’m kinda tired of the same old playlists on the radio, or the Israeli Idol remakes of the same old songs. It is indeed time for fresh, new voices.
Just the other day, with the kind help of the labyrinthine YouTube, I stumbled across a video clip of one of my favorite (American) bands in its first days, back in the days when the members were young and virtually anonymous, and the audience absolutely oblivious to their presence on stage. Only few months after the band was in the US top 10.

Sure, this *ain’t* America, but it makes me think of the all the new material that’s out there, and especially about the music that doesn’t (yet?) get to the headlines and best-selling lists. Apparently, a lot of new Israeli rock bands off the mainstream, are alive and kicking with live performances, official websites (including music samples), and even groupies. Some still working on their debut albums, some just uploading their material to the net, others luckier (and wealthier) recording and promoting their music in the right places.
Relatively new but already quite successful are Synergia, Beit Habubot (”Doll House”) and Izabo, joining good old Mashina, Rami Fortis, Barry Saharoff, the once controversial Aviv Geffen and the heaviest successful Israeli band Hayehudim (”The Jews”).
I wonder who’s next – and also who has been overlooked.

In the mood to explore?
