Behind the Persian Wall

Iran is the third largest nation of bloggers in the world. Its population tops 70 million. And yet when we think of Iran, all we can see is the face of one man. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

This wonderfully done animated clip asks us to take a look behind our common preconceptions.

  1. My response to this video, a very big “OKAY…..BUT!”

BUT we have been told of the Western-leaning, regime-hating Iranian Street for nearly 3 decades now! Yet there has not been even 1 attempt to oust the government! At the end of the day these students MUST REALIZE that their current regime is not leaving without a fight. When absolute power is challenged there is always bloodshed, nothing short of a complete revolution will (a) free Iranians, (b) improve Iranians conditions, (c) prevent the repercussions of continuing to allow the current regime to fund terror and threaten the entire region! If the regime continues on this path the ‘common Iranian’ will bare the brunt of sanctions, embargos and military operations.

Going the route of baby-steps & trying to get the government to reform itself has been a failure. When Khatami was elected everyone hoped for reform & change but at the end of the day, Khatami was JUST a legislator and thus any reforms would really NOT affect the ruling Mullahs (Mullahs sit far above ‘government’).

As I live in Toronto, I have met & gotten to know many young Persians. I agree that most support the West, despise their government and would like to see a Free Iran – my question is: IF THIS IS THE CASE, AND YOU MAKE UP SUCH A LARGE PART OF YOUR POPULATION THEN WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? At the end of the day, only the people of Iran can really effect lasting change in that country. It is in their best interest for if they do not, they will bare the full brunt of actions against their nation (as their leaders live lavishly!).
